Freelancers and Small Business Owners: What to Look for in a Chamber of Commerce

In a previous lesson, Why Every Freelance Writer Should Recruit Chamber of Commerce, I advised that each freelancer should join the entire Chamber of Commerce. However, not all chambers will provide immunity.

Here I will selling points what every freelancer and/or small business operator should look for before joining.

1. Dedicated Directs Meetings: What are consumers? Simply put, a time saved just for passing/getting prospective buyers - no hobnobbing, no meet and greet, no speakers - an occasion just for getting as well as passing leads.

In my previous article, I outlined what this signifies, but a quick recap can be follows:

Members are present you with a specified time (usually 30-45 seconds) to move a short commercial of that product/service. Mine usually goes something similar to:

My name is Yuwanda Black and i'm a freelance copywriter. I USUALLY write/produce web copy, notifications, sales letters, brochures and other marketing materials for small businesses. I work quickly def cost-consciously.

Recently, I provided a newly licensed realtor together with the copy for her website within just two days. A good lead my lifestyle today is a web designer, printer and/or communications manager.

NOTE: The reason I highlight the phrase today is that frequently, as a business developer, you may be targeting a new market. For example, I do very difficult with realtors and loan officers.

However, I also jot resumes. So, the tuesday, I may target employers at staffing agencies. Why? They often need cv's written, rewritten, edited and/or copy edited before they send them to your clients.

As this some sample illustrates, it's important to think carefully about what you would say during your day gift - because, as I stated in my last article, people listen peripherally UNTIL they hear a thing that strikes a chord for your children.

After all members are through with their commercial, leads/referrals are usually a then passed (hence, the requirement to be highly specific upon message).

2. Dedicated Leads Meetings - QUITE FREQUENTLY: One chamber I participate in offers networking events you are using irregular basis. In my estimation, this is not profitable, for the following hopes:

a) People do business with others they know, like then trust: If you don't see prospects quite frequently, there is no chance regarding any rapport. So, you never get to build these sentiments.

b) No thrill to imprint your brand: If you can't get in front of prospects on a typical basis, there is no chance to imprint truly on a prospect's the mind. Most people have to hide you 3-4 times before and remember your name, never mind that which you are.

c) No chance as being pulse of the world: Chambers of Commerce are classified as the local business community - eg, realtors, bankers, web site design companies, staffing agencies, clinicians, etc.

Via this 'network ', a wealth of data is often gleaned about places economy - eg, by what method new zoning laws effect x, which companies have closing, which are continue to grow, types of industries accepted to do well within the next 5, 10 years. It is a accessible research vehicle to study a ton about what you can do to increase your business's abstract.

For all of the very best reasons, it is vital know HOW OFTEN getting your chamber meets. In my estimation, it should be atleast weekly. One of the chambers I fit in has dedicated leads meetings twice each week - one early in the day and one in your worktime. This allows everyone - even with their schedule - to attend one or more.

3. Responsive Chamber Rap: As a new manhood, you are likely to become intimidated meeting other slimmers. Even if this isn't the case, you may can never predict anyone.

A good chamber rrncludes a representative who literally takes you step-by-step and introduces you some other members. S/he probably won't tells you about everyone - but will at least make 2-3 introductions get started on. It will usually go approximately:

"Mary, this is Yuwanda Blue. She owns Inkwell Short article, an editorial services firm weather factors. Yuwanda, Mary here is a chamber member for the last three years. She owns the area print shop. I thought it would be good for you two in order to meet each other. "

Usually "Mary" will weed through "Yuwanda" about what she does and introduce her to a couple more people. Any savvy business owner can do the rest.

NOTE: It can be intimidating to walk into a room full of people you don't know and tell them truly. But, and you will will just trust me on genuinely - chamber members are a couple of the nicest people let us ever meet.

They are usually hardworking small businesses just like you - and most will move on their way to cause you to feel comfortable and at easiness. AND, once you gain a foothold in the make, most members really do work to offer qualified referrals.

4. Dinner & Learns: Most chambers have enhancement seminars on much topics of interest to small businesses proprietors - how to hire right sales person, how to have a balanced life, the ethics of commercial, etc.

These are offered free and a reduced fee to perform chamber members. Many environments, the seminar presenters are usually chamber members themselves. Why is this important? It's an excellent chance for you to get your product/service in front of a bunch of interested prospects.

This also builds you and your family skills - and this tends to ostensibly add another revenue stream to your business. Many times after a seminar I have had attendees approach me about doing some form of work for their broker - ie, an inside seminar, produce a page of copy, an employee manual, even more.

5. Advertising: The final tip I have is that any slot provided you join should have some way to get the word out with each other business via just not the networking. Eg, on an e-blasted press release, work posting board, an line member directory, etc.

One of the storage I belong to offers this. It's usually in some form of limited capacity, eg, at the most one press release for quarter, but is proven beneficial.

In summary, I was a student in business for years for you to I joined a slot provided. My thinking was that they were just another organization a person to wanted a fee and serve no real great asset. Boy was I faulty!

Building relationships via the actual local chamber will take the time (remember, prospects have in order to meet, like and trust you), nevertheless the long-term benefits are from immeasurable.
