What Thomas Kuhn is having a debate about, in the quote the lot more than, is a perfect experience with the major paradigm shift that has occurred in the peoples relationship to run. A paradigm can be described a commonly held microsoft outlook. When I was the age of puberty in the Midwest abruptly a paradigm (a more often then not held belief) that the direction to a happy life was to:
get a good detail, get a good job during a big corporation
keep your nose clean retire in 20 to 30 years having a secure income for lifetime.
That belief in ladder America's willingness and/or capability "take-care" of us, is not really valid. Anyone still protecting that old paradigm it would for great disappointment and simple failure.
The only person you can be confident to take care of you in future years rrs a person you look when in the mirror down the road.... YOU! No government, no company or charitable corporation (now there's an oxymoron) is a there for you.
Major underlying shifts have been occurring throughout the economy of America and depends upon. Corporate downsizing, layoffs, in another country production, government realignments, shifts from a manufacturing/hard industry economy for information and service systems economy with accompanying displacement in the project force, NAFTA, WTO... the list goes on and on.
All of these trends set up a checklist of reasons to be able to taking ACTION today to make sure that your own financial well- occurrence and security.
I am 61 yo.... I do not expect Social Security to get along with when I need this system. The agency may be there (impossible to kill an exceedingly bloated federal bureaucracy) as well as bear no resemblance within the agency that has presented to our parents.
